The VDO Dayton Navigation System is a highly sophisticated driver guidance system which provides audio and visual instructions through a dash-mounted colour active matrix screen.

The system incorporates a GPS receiver to determine vehicle location and incorporates road map information stored on a library of CD-ROMs which are continually updated to keep pace with changes in roads and highways.

The Unit is operated by a hand-held infra-red remote control. After programming in a desired destination, the VDO Dayton system provides the driver real-time audio and visual instructions.

Graphic indicators of when and where to turn are displayed on the as the driver approaches the turn.

Route maps are displayed in variable scale and drivers can choose from routes based on shortest distance, shortest time of travel, or using primarily highways or primarily secondary roads. The system can make real-time calculations for estimated time remaining and estimated time of arrival.

VDO Dayton's navigation systems have been designed to be compatible with the digital traffic reporting systems planned for implementation in the future.
