Howard Instruments have been involved in the sale, repair, restoration and installation of Automotive, Marine, Commercial and Industrial Instruments accessories and other related products since 1971.

Howard Instruments was appointed both a Smiths and VDO sales and service agent soon after inception and has continued to sell and service both brands.

Howard Instruments has specialised in Speedometer, Tachometer and gauge repair and restoration over the past 46 years.

We share your interest in restoration and improvement.

Ian is restoring a D3 Stoewer. Rodger has a number of Mini's, a Marcos and a furmula junior open wheeler. Craig share's the ownership of a number of cars from the 1920's and he also has an AP5 Valiant under restoration.

We participate in Historic Touring Car Racing and Tarmac Rally along with attending major shows.We actively supprt car, motorcycle and truck club's through sponsorship along with speaking engagements at club meetings or hosting clubs at our premises.

Our library of screen printed dials has been expanded to complement our restoration services along with providing the basis of our range of custom gauges and instrument clusters.

We convert mechanical instruments to electronic and provide modified instruments and accessories for engine conversion projects and changes of ignition, voltage and polarity. Capillary temperature gauges, custom speedometer and tachometer cables along with fuel senders are also a specialty.

We have also moved with advent of new products and technologies into areas such as the installation of Weighing systems, Electronic Throttle Systems, Road Speed Limiting and rpm control systems, 360 degree Camera systems,Fleet Management, Fuel Monitoring and data logging.

We repair Digital Instrument Clusters and Digital Odometers. 

Our Speedometer Testing service includes a logged report.

We correct instrument calibration and use electronic and mechanical interfaces along with calibration of the instrument itself We are currently developing a number of CAN instrumentation solutions. We install CAN interfaces to run accessories such as cruise controls for electronic throttle systems.

We are one of Australia's largest sellers of VDO Instruments and arguably sell the broadest range.
We were appointed a Continental VDO Regional Distributor in 1998. 

We are the most comprehensive distributor of Smiths Instruments in Australia.

We manufacture our own range of safety products.

Directors: Ian and Sandra Howard.


Ian and Sandra started Howard Instruments in 1971 and continue to this day.


Ian is a qualified Instrument Maker who trained in the Australian Air Force in the 1960's.

His involvement in Instrument repair predates integrated circuits and computers as we know them today. He has continued to train on every new technology since the 1960's and is excited by the fact that he learns something new every day.


Sam is a former primary school teacher and the cornerstone of Howard Instruments.

There is very little that she has not observed during the time that she has run the front counter at Howard Instruments.


Rodger Howard.


Rodger joined the family firm in the mid 1990's after a period qualifying and practicing in Hospitality Management, Accounting, Commercial Law and TAFE Teaching.

He is a qualified Automotive Electrician and has trained in the full VDO product range both in Australia and in Germany.

His interest in classic cars and the history of automotive instrumentation is quite simply an obsession.


Craig Durran.


Craig has worked as an Automotive Instrument Technician for more than 15 years.

He is a qualified Automotive Electrician who has also trained in the range of VDO products.

He is a specialist in the installation of Road Speed Limiting systems, cable making and the restoration of muscle car instrumentation.



Miyuki looks after procurement and accounts receivable.


We also rely heavily on a wide range of highly skilled contractors. These include Screen Printers, Polishers, Chrome and zinc plater and machinists just to name a few.
